Some photos from around NZ

My parents came from the UK for their first trip to NZ and I got to see a whole bunch of the south island for the first time.
My dad bought the first DSLR they've ever had for christmas, a Lumix G1.

I got to try it out and as I'm looking for a DSLR of my own, but have a long way to go before I can get one with a baby on the way, and I have to say I came away very impressed with it.

We took about 5k photos, most being just holiday snaps and a stupid amount of macro shots of just about everything...

So here is a sample of photos I particularly like, keep in mind these are all free hand (they forgot the tripod) and pretty much my first attempts at any of these kinds of photos.

(the cave shots are all just the lighting in the cave, which impressed me)

(not sure which of these I prefer, I think the table is nicer but i could also be clutter?)

Sorry for a lot of pics, but that's pretty much gonna be all the photos I get to post until I can afford my own DSLR

Serious Post Processing Noob Question (w/ 2 examples)

I feel fairly confident (sometimes!) in my photography skills as far as taking the actual photos goes, I just know NOTHING about what to do with the photos after taking them.

I just got Photoshop CS3 and would like to use it to give my photos an extra touch of pizazz, but I'm thoroughly overwhelmed. What should I be doing? Sharpening? Some kind of filter? Levels (whatever that means)? Looking specifically at the two photos attached, could anyone offer any advice (strictly from a PP standpoint, since I feel happy with the actual composition, exposure, etc) on what would really make these shots stand out? Or should I just leave well enough alone?

Whoa! What did I do?

SOOC! (Straight-Out-Of-Camera)

A little confused about depth of field?

I understand the shallow depth of field, but is there a difference with large depth of field?

Behind the Jeff Bridges Cover Shoot

I suppose I'm posting this because it's often nice to hear the story behind a shoot and not just the lighting and technical dynamics. Although that will follow in the next article.

Read the article here.

If you have any thoughts or feedback, I would live to hear it. :)

Would you buy a camera with 20k actuations?

I am in the process of hunting for a deal on a 50D and found that my friend's parents have one that they are looking to get rid of. They also have the Canon battery grip and 2 extra batteries. Looking to get rid of the whole thing for $800. However, while the camera has been meticulously cared for, it has been well used, with about 20,000 shutter actuations. I know that they are rated for 100k, so I am not thinking it should be a problem, but just want to get some opinions on the likelihood of something failing in the next 3-4 years/25,000 pictures as opposed to a body with 5,000.

Thanks
